Chapter Seven

Kingsley

So what was he doing here? My old crush. My first date. My first kiss. It felt weird being in the remaining bits and pieces of my Viking costume. Brown leather, fur trim. The vest open in front over a form-fitting brown tee-shirt.

Eli wore a button-down khaki shirt that strained across his broad shoulders. His tailored jeans were fitted carefully enough to whisper, but not shout, about the blocky contours of his muscular ass. No Halloween costume for him. Unless “fake FBI driver” could be considered a costume.

Hugging him felt... hell. I wasn't even sure what I felt. Such a shock to see him here or anywhere, when I always assumed I'd never see him again. His broad shoulders were even broader. His long legs were longer. Did he still have the tattoo of the bull shark on his right pec? Or had his father found out, forced him to have it lasered away?

Back in the old days, Eli had never been involved in his father's crimes. He was just a regular Catholic high school kid who liked to cut up and play football.

A kid whose father happened to be middling-high up in the Demayo organization.

And now he was part of an abduction team? Trusted enough to help take a man alive?

Maybe it wasn't about how trusted Eli was. Maybe it was about how desperate the Demayo network had become.

Either way, he'd done it. Helped take me down, and not just me. Stryker too. It had been years, and we'd been kids, and the truth was I didn't know this Eli at all.

He could be a true Demayo now, or he could be a traitor. A man with a plan to trade me to the FBI to save his father. Anything could be true.

I needed more information.

“I thought you'd be in college now,” I said. “I thought you were already admitted to the University of Chicago.”

His face closed. “My father's arrest ended that. It ended everything. The feds froze the money. Everything. My mom... what could she do?”

What could she do? I waited.

“She tried to take some money out of the bank some kind of way the feds didn't like, and now she's all arrested too. No bail, they claim she might run.” His face twisted like a fist, and I thought he might be trying not to cry. “It's a shitty situation, Kyle. How do they expect people to live?”

I didn't know. Witness protection, maybe? “I'm sorry.”

“It's all right. I mean, it isn't all right, but it isn't your fault.” Eli touched my arm. “Fuck it. I don't like it in here. The walls are starting to close in.”

“We can walk. I wouldn't mind getting some air myself. If the goons don't mind.”

“They don't mind.”

He led me out of the building, nodding at our escorts, who fell silently into step behind us. It was a cold, crisp night somewhere in a hilly area with trees, but Eli didn't walk too far from the building, choosing instead to pace here and there in the back parking lot.
